Church launches fundraising appeal to sponsor a piece of Redhill history

Sponsor a Slate on our new building

Residents of Redhill and Reigate have a chance to make local history by sponsoring a roof slate in the new parish centre at St John’s Church, which is currently under construction.

For a £10 donation, people can sponsor a slate and sign it with a personal message before it is slotted into the roof of the £2.3 million new building, which is being built next to the church, on Church Road, St John’s. For a larger donation people can also put their name to a stone column or a stained glass window within the new facility, which will allow St John’s to provide a home for its many church-related groups as well as to play a bigger role in the community it serves.

Sponsor a Slate on our new building

Chris Clapham, chairman of the new building appeal fund at the church, said: “Sponsoring a slate really gives local people the chance to be a part of our wonderful project. People will be helping to provide for future generations who will use the new parish centre as well as sponsoring a piece of Redhill history.

“This parish centre will be of benefit not just to our church’s existing groups - from youth groups to those for older people - but also those in the wider community as we increase our activities to involve others in Redhill. So we’re giving the local community this chance to really feel a sense of ownership about a building which, ultimately, will be for them.

“We’ve got 10,000 slates, which will be going on the roof over the next few weeks. So, with Christmas coming up, this is the perfect chance to buy a gift in the name of a friend or family member, put a personal message on the slate using our special pen, receive a commemorative certificate and sponsor a piece of the new building.”

The church’s ‘sponsor a slate’ scheme is the latest in a series of fundraising activities as part of its ‘Building for the future’ campaign. Parishioners have already raised £1.7 million in a little over two years, towards the fundraising target of £2.3 million.

Be a part of local history

Sponsor a roof slate, stone column or stained glass window panel and help us complete our new building. Each sponsorship will receive a commemorative certificate – making an ideal gift with a difference or a lasting way to mark a special occasion or event. Built today, like yesteryear, for your tomorrow.

St John’s features on Susy Radio Christmas Day broadcast

St John’s Choir

A Carols by Candlelight service at St John’s Church, Redhill was the focal point of Susy Radio’s Christmas Day broadcast.

The carol service, held on Sunday 18 December, was pre-recorded by the Merstham-based community radio station, which selects a local church each year to feature on its Christmas Day schedule. The service was broadcast at 1pm on 103.4FM and is now available on demand at www.susyradio.com

This year’s service includes a first-broadcast performance of Sleep, my Jesu by Jamie Hall, which the composer allowed to be printed and performed at Christmas 2016 for a voluntary donation to Macmillan Cancer Support. Supporting donations are always welcome.

The other carols include Zither Carol, a Czech Folk Song arranged by Malcolm Sargent, People Look East by Barry Ferguson, A Strange Way To Save the World by Clark, Harris and Koch (arranged R Maudlin) and I Saw Three Ships arranged by David Willcocks. The voluntary is Toccata from 5th Symphony by C-M Widor.

Reverend John Kronenberg, vicar of St John’s, said: “Christmas is a very special time of year and we are honoured and excited that Susy Radio has made ours even more so by choosing us as the venue for its annual recording of a Christmas Carol service.

“Having Susy Radio choose St John’s is a fantastic reward for the choir - led by our director of music Ginette Nye and her husband Peter, our organist - who have put in several months’ work for our annual carol services. The whole choir works hard throughout the year and Susy Radio’s listeners are in for a special treat on Christmas Day”.

Collect for the Third Sunday of Epiphany

Almighty God,
whose Son revealed in signs and miracles
the wonder of your saving presence:
renew your people with your heavenly grace,
and in all our weakness
sustain us by your mighty power;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
