Meadvale Hall Update February 2025
An open letter from the Vicar, Churchwardens & PCC

This is a summary of the open letter issued to the congregation on Sunday 2nd Feb 2025 and the wider community via social media. To read the full letter click here.

As the Parochial Church Council (PCC) for St Johns, we promote the Christian message and are legally responsible for the finances of the parish, including the care and maintenance of all church buildings and their contents here at St John’s.

We faced significant financial challenges in 2022 and 2023, leading to special measures by the Diocese of Southwark. The church experienced substantial increases in utility costs and mortgage payments, along with the loss of a major regular hirer. In response, the PCC made the difficult decision to sell Meadvale Hall due to its deteriorating condition and maintenance costs. The proceeds from this sale will be used to pay off a substantial portion of the Community Centre mortgage, aiming to stabilize the church's long-term financial position.

Despite efforts to facilitate a community buy-out of Meadvale Hall over the past 18 months, no community group has secured the necessary funds. As a result, the church will actively market the site for sale and close the premises as soon as possible this year. Additionally, the church is facing significant roof repair costs due to water damage from last year's storms, with expensive lead repairs required to comply with the building's Grade II listed status. We are most grateful to Councillor Natalie Bramhall for her generous support and to all the members of our community who have contributed to our roofing appeal which must now continue out of financial necessity.

We on the PCC will continue to execute our responsibilities to the best of our abilities as we look to meet the needs of our congregation and the local community, which we are very proud to be an active part of, now and for the years to come.

St John's Church Roof Emergency Appeal

Following the recent storms we urgently need to raise funds to carry out emergency repairs to the church roof.

Despite the best efforts of the volunteer maintenance team, the valley gutter between the south aisle and the main church roof has failed and significant damage is being done the the fabric of the building as well as water leaking into the church itself. The Sunday service at the end of October was held to the sound of water dripping into buckets!

Due to the financial crisis we are unable to pay for these repairs from our funds ands as such are asking the local community for help.

We have set up a Just Giving Fundraising Page, which can be accessed here (or by scanning the QR code to the right), and if you are a UK tax payer please remember to also select the Gift-Aid option to maximise the value of your donation.
